Interview Tips

By: Katie Giannetto

This is the time where a lot of people interview for seasonal jobs  and internships. Below are a few tips for interviews so you don’t get nervous!

Research

Research is very important when being interviewed. You need to know what you may be asked. Knowing what you are interviewing for is very important. Take a little bit of time to research the company: their goals, ideas, what type of people they’re looking for, what they’re company is about, etc. Not only will this help you answer questions, it will also ask you to ask questions. It is important to ask your interviewer questions so they know you are engaged in what they’re saying and so they know you did your research. You can ask questions as simple as what they’re looking for, where the company itself would see themselves in a couple of years, or even unanswered questions about the position itself.

Resume

Make sure to always update your resume. This is the first thing the interviewer sees before they get to talk to you. If you ever need help on editing it or making one, STARR has available counselors to help you! Always utilize Baruch’s resources!

It is always good to have a neat and concise resume. Make sure to include all experiences and awards you have received. Always keep an updated version after getting a new opportunity. Nothing is too little when adding it to your resume, you should want to brag about your accomplishments, so they know you will make a good impact on their company.

Confidence

I’ve always liked the saying “fake it till you make it.” This doesn’t mean to come unprepared, but in terms of confidence it comes naturally. Usually before an interview you’re nervous and you’re sweating as you're answering the questions the interviewer is asking. I always look at an interview lightly, I prepare for it, confidently answer all questions asked, and wait for a response. You shouldn't stress over something that you can’t control. If you’ve done all you can in preparation, you got it!

Of course, you can utilize Baruch’s resources at STARR and have a mock interview with one of the counselors. This will prepare you for a general interview you may run into, but not all. Do not be afraid to talk about yourself and do it with confidence.

Interviews are a stressful process at times, however, you can get through it. With research, and an updated resume, and confidence, your interviews will go fine!
