April has officially begun, and that means it’s time for Spring cleaning. Between school, work, and a social life, cleaning is probably the last thing on anyone’s mind. However, it’s important to clean and disinfect regularly to prevent bacteria, viruses, and germs from growing, and to help with organization and productivity. If you’ve been procrastinating on deep cleaning your space, here are some tips to help you get started.
1. You don’t need any fancy tools or cleaners.
A multipurpose cleaner is perfect for most surfaces, but dish soap, vinegar, baking soda, and other common household items are also perfect for cleaning. Most of these items are budget-friendly and easy to find. One thing you should consider purchasing, however, is a disinfectant to take care of high touch points, which I will discuss more later.
2. Start at the top of each room, and work your way down.
When you’re cleaning, any debris or dust will fall down, so it’s best to start at the top first. Clean picture frames on the walls, lighting fixtures, window blinds, and anything else up high first. Then, move onto lower-level items like your desk, bed frame, and nightstands. Finally, clean everything that’s on or near the floor. For example, baseboards, storage containers, lamps, and chairs. Following this order will help you clean efficiently and effectively.
3. Dust before vacuuming.
As mentioned previously, when you dust, debris will fall downwards, so you don’t want to vacuum first, or else you’ll end up having to vacuum twice. So, you should dust, wipe everything down with a cleaner, and then vacuum to save time and energy.
4. Focus on high-traffic/high-contact areas.
Since the COVID-19 pandemic broke out, people have become much more aware of germs. It is a good idea to disinfect (not just dust) high touch points. Some of these points include doorknobs, toilet bowl handles, light switches, stove knobs, and fridge door handles. Take a look around your space and see what you use/touch most. These are the places that need extra attention. Be sure to read the directions on your disinfectant because in many cases, you have to let it sit, without wiping, for the disinfecting agent to work.
5. Don’t forget other spaces.
Once you’ve cleaned your main living space, think about other places that might need a little extra care. Perhaps your car has lots of trash in it, or maybe your wallet is cluttered with receipts from years ago. Whatever it may be, take the time to clean out these spaces – it will make you feel much more organized. One thing you should not forget is your phone, which can carry so much bacteria. Clean and disinfect your phone regularly to avoid transferring that bacteria to every surface you touch.
6. Take it slow.
Cleaning isn’t a race. Even if you clean for 10-15 minutes each day, you will make huge progress. Cleaning can be difficult, and there is no rush to clean everything all at once. Take your time and do a thorough job.
No one said cleaning was easy, but it is necessary. Hopefully, these tips will help you clean efficiently and effectively, without dreading every minute of it. Today’s a great day to start Spring cleaning, so make it count!
