On Thursday, November 4th, the Marketing Committee presented their Fall 2020 event called When to Disconnect: Social Media vs. Self-Perception. The event was aimed at opening up discussion about the dangers of social media and its effects on self-esteem.
One of the highlights of the event was the breakout activity, which involved members sharing their daily affirmations and their personal experiences with social media and the pressures around posting their best selfies. Through this uplifting discussion, members were validated and unified in their views on encouraging female empowerment.
When everyone returned from the breakout session, the groups shared input from their discussions. The direction of the conversation steered towards female figureheads on social media and how they should wield their power to encourage body positivity among young girls. As role models to young girls worldwide, television personalities such as the Kardashians should leverage their influence to dissolve unrealistic beauty standards and generate confidence among women of all colors and body types.
Overall the second WIB Talk of the semester had a great turnout and engaging activities. Thank you to all attendees for joining and sharing your insights during this event!
